Masala is a spice that Indians use on everything, and it
brings us to tears every time we eat it, because it is so spicy!! They literally put it on everything, from
chicken to their drinks to popcorn. There is an ongoing joke among our team,
that just when we thought that we escaped food with masala in it, it seems like
they add more and more to the dishes that we eat, and then they bring out an
extra side of masala.

SummerLINK Myrtle Beach: Glory! (clap) Praise the Lord (clap clap!)
The "Honeymoon Phase" is officially over! This week has been awesome. So much of the Truth of God's word has been among the team. Conflict finally happened (Praise the Lord). I've been reminded of a story of a man who prays to Jesus asking Him to receive the power to never sin again. Jesus replies to him saying, "Then when would I forgive you?" Showing mercy and grace are a part of God's character, and what a beautiful sign of the gospel to forgive one another just as Christ has forgiven us: completely!
Ryan and Corey left last week and placed Michelle Ellis and me as the leaders in their stead. The Lord has reminded us of His Sovereignty and power by various verses in Psalms.
I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
Psalm 33:16-20 - The king is not saved by a mighty army; A warrior is not delivered by great strength. A horse is a false hope for victory; Nor does it deliver anyone by it's great strength.
Psalm 37:23-24 - The steps of a man are established by the Lord and He delights in his way. Though he fall, he will not be utterly cast down for the Lord holds his hand.
Victory belongs to the Lord. With the majority of the summer being over, it has been a test of faith that the Lord will use our short time of ten weeks. I praise the Lord I do not dictate salvation. I do not draw peoples hearts. The act of someone coming to the Lord is a complete miracle of God and I am privileged to be used in the plan of the Lord. Even the reminder that Jesus will build his kingdom regardless of my actions is comforting. I can not stop God from building His kingdom. My opinions toward Jesus do not dictate his Lordship. Praise the Lord that "by our own sword we did not possess Myrtle Beach, and our own arm did not save us, but Your right hand and Your arm and the light of Your presence, for you favor us" Psalm 44:3 (New James Wilson Version). The mission is not our mission but God's mission. Russ reminded Cornerstone Church today that we serve a Missionary God. He came to us and paid the penalty we deserved so we could live in communion with Him. God will complete His mission whether we agree with it or not. Praise the Lord that I can trust in the promise that if I abide in Christ I WILL bear fruit (John 15). That's a fact whether I see the fruit or not.
We have continued to read Dietrich Bonhoeffer's book Life Together and this truth is made very clear: whether I feel free of my sin or not, I stand innocent because I am in Christ. My feelings do not dictate truth. Praise the Lord! What a glorious truth to walk in that the God we serve is supreme and His word pronounced upon me is true whether I believe it or not. This week, the chapter on Ministry was our assigned reading, and we were extremely blessed by the time of discussion with Kevin and Kelly Hill during Home Night on mondaynight. Bonhoeffer talked about the different ministries Christians perform to others such as holding our tongue, meekness, listening, proclaiming the word, and authority. He states that all of these come from our Salvation by Grace and our desire to serve one another. These truths have been especially true for me in the time of filling in the gap of leadership. If I truly want to lead then I am beckoned to serve my brothers. This is what Jesus did, does, and will do for all of eternity. When Jesus said "it is finished" He didn't mean his time of serving. This is our God: the servant of all servants who redefined leadership for His people.
Tuesday was our reflection night which was nice because the church was locked so I was forced to find another location with Wifi. Chickfila, my place of employment, it's almost like the local church....right? Got to see some fellow workers and get some free sweet nectar.
Tim Dietrich did a fantastic job leading our group in Bible study on wednesday night. He emphasized the importance of meditating on the Word of God and the importance of this action in our relationship with Jesus.
Thursday night was men and women's times which the men spent productively watching some little league baseball at the Market Common baseball fields. Go Myrtle Beach Stars! They only had 9 people on their team and they were strugglin'. They lost the game but the pitcher was going to Clemson to study food science which is what Logan Pierce is majoring in so that was a neat connection.
Friday night was a mad dash for all college students everywhere to get free chicken. Chickfila has been such a blessing this summer. We then got to cook Czeckoslovakian Apple Cake WHICH IS DELICIOUS!!!!! We made it for our prosepective places of work as an outreach. We had baked cookies previously and people enjoyed them so much we decided to make something again.
God continues to work down here and I laugh to myself sometimes when I realize where I am. In a place where I pass more strip clubs than churches on my way to work, a place where drug addicts hang out right outside my doorstep, and a place where sin blatantly abounds, God's grace abounds all the more and his grace and mercy conquer sin.
Psalm 16:7-11 - I will bless the Lord who has counseled me;
Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night.I have set the Lord continually before me;
Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.
Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices;
My flesh also will dwell securely.
For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol;
Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.
You will make known to me the path of life;
In Your presence is fullness of joy;
In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.

SummerLINK Boston: What A Friend We Have in Jesus
Hello from Boston!
This week we’ve been serving at Soccer Nights, a free soccer
camp for kids sponsored by Redemption Hill Church. Every night we’ve had over
200 kids come out and play with us. One wonderful surprise has been that many
of the children we work with at the Boys and Girls Club and the Willis Avenue
Center have also attended Soccer Nights, and this has given us more time to
love these children. The forum of Soccer Nights provides us a unique opportunity
to mingle among parents and engage in meaningful conversations. The Lord has
been gracious to provide many openings to speak the Gospel to the families in
attendance. In addition, Redemption Hill is launching a new, free counseling
ministry, and we have been able to offer this service up to the Medford
community.
Wednesday night as we were closing up Soccer Nights and
looking over contact cards with our volunteer crew (including our friends from
Open Door Church in Raleigh), Pastor Tanner Turley mentioned something that struck
me: Soccer Nights has ridden atop many prayers – and because of this, it will
continue to be a fruitful labor (roughly paraphrased – I’m certain he put it
more eloquently).
Not only is this a delightful Truth, but it is also convicting.
Truth rests in worshipping Christ Jesus. When He was on earth, the God-Man
prayed. In a grand mystery, the One who is one with the Father, “who, although
He existed in the form of God, did not regard equality with God a thing to be
grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant, and being made
in the likeness of men,” the One who is all-powerful, all-knowing, praying to
the Father, who is all-powerful, all-knowing. Jesus prayed for the protection
of His sheep (John 17:15), the unity of His future followers (John 17:20-21),
and daily grace (Matthew 6:11). Jesus commanded us to pray that we would not
fall into temptation (Luke 22:46). Inspired by the Holy Spirit, the Apostle
Paul exhorts us to pray for all people (1 Timothy 2:1). I have pitifully
followed the Lord’s example or kept the Lord’s commands regarding prayer. In
times of trial, my instinct is to be my own first-responder and seek
damage-control. In temptation, my flesh tells me that I, all on my own, am
indeed strong enough to resist.
At the same time, all of SummerLINK has been reading
Dietrich Bonheoffer’s Life Together.
Just the other day I read an excerpt entitled “The Secret of the Psalter” where
Bonheoffer asserts that the psalms – those so often difficult to read, those
calling for the slaughter of enemies, those declaring innocence, those
lamenting undeserved suffering – are the prayers of Jesus. Bonheoffer writes
that the Christian “can pray these psalms, through Jesus Christ, from the heart
of Jesus Christ.”
As Tanner spoke about a church that made prayer their
primary labor, I was reminded of the following quote from C.S. Lewis’ Mere Christianity: “[The Lord’s
Prayer’s] very first words are Our Father.
Do you now see what those words mean? They mean quite frankly, that you are
putting yourself in the place of a son of God. To put it bluntly, you are
dressing up as Christ. If you like, you are pretending. Because, of course, the
moment you realize what the words mean, you realize that you are not a son of
God. You are not a being like The Son of God, whose will and interests are at
one with those of the Father: you are a bundle of self-centered fears, hopes,
greeds, jealousies, and self-conceit, all doomed to death. So that, in a way,
this dressing up as Christ is a piece of outrageous cheek. But the odd thing is
that He has ordered us to do it.”
Lewis puts more broadly what Bonheoffer has illuminated in
the psalms: to pray is to pray “through Jesus” and “from the heart of Jesus.” The
ability to “boldly approach the throne of grace” is only granted when we are
hidden in the righteousness of the Son. It is the special privilege of the Believer to pray in the name of
the Son. Prayer is a communication of the outrageous Gospel: an enemy has been
made a friend, someone far has been brought near, a slave to sin has been made
a son of the Almighty - only by the finished work of Christ.
And so the Lord is teaching me the necessity and beauty of
prayer in temptation, in trials, in ministry, in daily provision – a reminder
that my “number one job description is walking with the Lord (a bit of wisdom
from Jeremy Chasteen).” May we never forget what a glorious scandal it is that
we, wretched sinners, are able to approach the Eternal One by claiming the name
of His Holy Son, and in being startled by this grace find ourselves so in
love with the Rescuer that we are able to pray earnestly, with enthusiasm,
unceasingly: “Your will be done.”
For those of you interceding for the Boston team:
- pray for the Lord to continuously strengthen our leaders
Chad and Christy, & their sweet baby boy Grayson has recently gotten his first infection - pray for a quick recovery and that he would be able to sleep soundly!
- pray that our team unity will continue to abound, so far we have been very blessed!
- pray for our obedience in boldly declaring the Gospel
- pray that our team unity will continue to abound, so far we have been very blessed!
- pray for our obedience in boldly declaring the Gospel
- pray for Redemption Hill Church and the city of Boston
with knowledge that despite the darkness present “let no one boast in men. For
all things belong to you (the church), […] and you belong to Christ; and Christ
belongs to God.” This city is His, and we are here to proclaim the King’s
return.
In Him,
Farris

SummerLINK Honduras: The Dump
Saturday our team went to the Dump for the first time. The Dump is about 1 1/2 hours from our place. All week long we had been working with a great group of kids in our English class who we thought had a lot of energy. After going to the Dump we found out the true meaning of "high energy kids!"
Soon after we got there, kids gathered around the doors to the church ready for some entertainment. Elizabeth was there to capture their excited faces. :)
Although these kids are around the same ages as the kids we work with Monday, Wednesday, Friday, they are in a different world. They live and depend on the trash other people dispose of. They have grown up in "survival mode" and depend on each other for support.
I have no idea what they were thinking when they saw us gringos running around playing and trying to communicate in broken S`panish, but I do know that they saw and heard us because they quickly became our friends! At first this little girl (above) was skeptical ;)
After telling the story of Noah's Ark we went outside for a good 'ole game of "Luz Rojo, Luz Verde" (Red Light, Green Light). In the midst of all the trash and poverty, these kids know how to have fun and run fast! Needless to say, they beat us gringos every time.
The hill that you see in the back of this picture above is literally growing. A truck takes a load up, dumps it out, and smoothes it nicely over yesterdays trash. People at the Dump seem to live by the saying "one man's trash is another man's treasure." As the trucks are driving up to the hill teens will jump on the back to salvage what they can. It was definitely a new sight for my eyes and some of my teammates.
We had a nice lunch in La Ceiba then began the trek back home. Mrs. Pirkle is a great driver, but here in Honduras sometimes even the best drivers can get stuck behind cows. All was well in the end and we got home safely.
The Lord has blessed our team this summer. He is so loving to us as we live here in Honduras to spread the Word! We see Him in nature, in each other, and in the sweet sweet children we spend our days with. Pray for a softening of the hearts of the Hondurans. We are here for the Lord and need to be constantly reminded.

Summer LINK India: Becoming I-townies
We left the States on July 2nd, with all the essentials of course:
And every flight,
layover, and connection went according to plan! So that was great. We watched some great B-list movies on the plane, slept in quite novel airport chairs, and finally made it to Amy and Rachel welcoming us in I-town on July 4th!:
We got in at around 8:00 AM, so we took a few hours to clean up, nap,
etc., and then we hit the ground running going to lunch with Amy and Rachel at
a nice Indian place. After lunch we went
to their apartment to talk orientation for a few hours, then took some auto
rickshaws to the mall to walk around, get out in the city, and talk to some ‘localites’,
as they say here. We then went back to
Amy’s to have some BBQ and celebrate the fourth. It was a great way to spend the day as it
helped push through jet lag (I may have fallen asleep momentarily while Amy was
talking to us), and experience I-town a bit.
The next couple days were spent
doing orientation things as well. On the
5th, we had a scavenger hunt competition in the city. We split into two groups (#1: Kayla, Jill,
Anna Grace, Justin, #2: Josh, Anna, Amy Calfas), and had to find/do as many
things on the competition directions as possible (some items included noting
exotic animals in the street, finding the biggest pile of excrement in the
street, finding different “wallas”, going to local hotspots, etc. ). Unfortunately, walking an absurd amount
aimlessly through the city was not a high point scorer, and my team (2) lost to
team number one. Gotta hate that lack of
directional awareness (and I’ve even been here before :/ ). But, both teams got to see and experience a
lot of the city:
Authentic Indian food: great goin' in, questionable coming out
Kay Kay getting some Mehndi (Henna)
Amy and Anna with a priest at a Hindu temple
Jill eating who knows what...her team won the scavenger hunt
Brilliant
Auto-Rickshaw magic
We spent the next day traveling around the city to different places of worship and hotspots. Ended up catching an elephant as well:
We also got to help Rachel teach an English
class:
And we had the privilege of ending the day hanging out with a group of
national believers at Amy’s house. It
was great for me to see some of the friends I had met 3 years ago and to see
them doing well. These guys are filled with
joy, faith, and quiet strength and love to worship their Lord. Their relationship with him was and is a huge
challenge and encouragement to me. The
words, “being spurred on” have real meaning when interacting with them and
watching them worship.
Yesterday, we visited a few Sunday
gatherings (one in Hindi and one in English):
Rachel, Amy, Anna, and Amy
It’s been a great first four/five days here.
Its felt a lot longer than that, but we've been able to jump into the
culture, meet new people, and get acclimated to the area.
I'll leave you with some other random pics of our team, the last one certainly not being the least:
Jill, Anna Grace, and myself in an auto
Justin has been great meeting people and making friends
India's turned him into a Diva ;)

SummerLINK Myrtle Beach: We are Family
It’s hard to believe that Summer LINK Myrtle Beach is almost
over! There are only a few more weeks left here at the Sea Mist and Cornerstone
but so much to learn! Looking back
though, I’ve seen so much growth in and around our team.
Sunday started out with Pastor Russ Bennett preaching on Matthew 7: 21-29. This was Pastor Russ’ last sermon from the Sermon on the Mount. After church, we went to Jimmyz Hibachi for lunch with Nick and Christa. Nick is the roommate of one of the lifeguards we came to know the first week of Summer LINK. Later that evening, we went to a beach baptism with Cornerstone for Holly Moore. They then invited us over to their house for root beer floats. It was a sweet time getting to talk with the Moore family again and celebrate in Holly’s public pronouncement of her faith in Christ. It was and is such a blessing to be able to be apart of the Church family. Later that night, we had a mid-summer evaluation back at the Sea Mist.
On Monday, everyone went back to their workplaces not only
to work but to continue to be intentional with coworkers. I work at the Sea Mist with Daniel
along with two Russians, two Bulgarians, and one Irish girl. I’ll be the first to say that it’s not
always easy to talk about Christ when there’s a slight language barrier. That hasn’t stopped the Lord from
working, though! I’ve been
encouraged this week in how open our Sea Mist coworkers have been with us about
their home countries and families.
I’ve also heard stories from other Summer LINKers about their workplaces
and how God is using them to spread the Gospel. He is so good!
After work on Monday, we had our mid-summer banquet at Travinia’s. Let’s just say we ate enough food for
days. Our chivalrous men even
escorted the women one by one to the car with the umbrella because it was
pouring down rain.
God also had his own plan for us that morning besides the sunrise. While on the beach, we meet a young couple named Bonnie and Norian. They came up to us to share their photos from that morning, and we ended up in conversation with them. They had only come down for the day and were planning on leaving the next day. Hannah was able to get Bonnie’s number, and they have been in contact a few times since. It’s amazing how the Lord works in little ways like that. After we attempted to watch the sunrise, we had a sweet time of prayer before everyone departed to his or her workplace. We have decided to do this every Tuesday morning as a time to just talk to the Lord about our prayers for the rest of the day and week. Tuesday night was home night at the Bennett’s. We were graciously served breakfast for dinner with fresh waffles, almost all the toppings you could think of, egg and cheese casserole, and fresh fruit. We got to play with the kids too. Ellie (their less than a year old baby) was the star of the show, and Bailey and Cohen were also enjoying spending time with the Summer LINKers. We then got to hear the testimonies of Miranda and Russ; hearing them talk about how the Lord has worked in their life was a true testament to the Lord’s grace and mercy!
Wednesday morning was a sad day as our two leaders, Corey
and Ryan, left to go back to their homes.
Even though they are coming back down at the end of the summer, it was
still a bittersweet moment. Later
on that night, we had bible study at Dustin and Avery Raley’s house. While there, we discussed Pastor Russ’
sermon on Matthew 7: 21-29, and we also got to listen to Dustin and Avery’s
testimonies.
On Thursday, the hospitality team cooked hotdogs for the
team in the spirit of the 4th of July. After our American inspired dinner, we packed up and headed
out to the boardwalk for some evangelism and to watch the fireworks from the
pier. We parked at Fresh Brewed
and split up into teams. I was on
a team with Daniel and James, and the rest of the group was split up into two
other teams. We ended up talking
to two men. One was a farmer from
Kentucky and the other was a travel photographer living in Myrtle Beach. It was amazing how the Lord worked to
open up the hearts of these men to talk with us. After the fireworks, we gathered back together at Fresh
Brewed to discuss the night. It
will never get old seeing how the Lord works through his disciples. Some times it can get discouraging when
people aren’t receptive to conversations.
However, since I’ve been here, God has really placed on my heart the
fact that we are still doing His work, even though fruits may not be seen
immediately.
We could see the finish line coming as Friday morning came. After a long 8 hours at the Sea Mist
front desk, we were free for the weekend.
Friday was our free night, but our group just loves each other too much
to stay away from each other. We
ended up going to Cracker Barrel for dinner and went to see Despicable Me
2.
It’s crazy to think that in just four short weeks, Summer
LINK will be over. The sweet
thing, though, is that the relationships we’ve built here will carry over at
Clemson, SWU, and Anderson. I’m so
excited for the rest of Summer LINK, but I’m also excited to see how the Lord
will continue to work through and within us after we go back to Crosspoint. Whatever He has in store, it will be
good!

Summer LINK Boston: 4th of July Cookout
We have had a great week in Boston! In the past couple of days, we were able to tour and get to know the city a bit.
Blink team in Boston Common
Mother Goose's duckings statue in Boston Public Garden... all the little ducklings following their leader :)
We were also invited to an international student cookout on the 4th of July. Some of our team met a girl on the train who invited our whole team over. It's amazing to see how faithful our God truly is. We were suppose to go and work at the Boys and Girls Club on July 4th but it was closed so it was cool to see how God orchestrated everything. We were able to meet around 20 international students from places like Brazil, Venezuela, Russia, and Taiwan. We will be interacting with them more over the next few weeks. Pray that God would convict them of sin and bring them in relationship with Him.
God has been so gracious to us so far; providing opportunities for us that we did not plan.
- Pray for the city of Boston that the gospel would go out in boldness.
- Pray that the nations would be reached.
- Pray for our team that we would make every effort to be intentional with our time, using it to further the gospel in this place.
